How do I setup my SOHO network.

How should I setup my SOHO network?
The answer to the question is not as easy as it seems because there are a lot of variables depending on what you are going to do on the network. The most common configuration is one where the SOHO network has several machines that are connected to the internet via a DSL or Cable Modem. This is a simple setup and there is little or no manual configuration.

A SOHO router would be connected to the DSL or Cable Modem. Most of SOHO routers have enough network ports on the back to support four PC’s and if you purchased a wireless router you’ll be able to use wireless too.
The router serves as a "server" for DHCP, firewall, DNS etc. and a hub/switch in one.

Make sure to follow the directions that come with your router when setting up your SOHO network. The most important step in the configuration is to change the default password on the router. If you don’t do this, someone may be able to lock you out of your own network or worse.

If you are using wireless, make sure to enable wireless security. This will ensure that only authorized computers will have access to your wireless network.

If you can’t figure out how to do this on your own with the instructions from your router, make sure to find someone that can help you. Setting this up incorrectly can put your important files at risk.
