Welcome
Welcome to The Advisers Group. We’ve changed our name to better fit what we do. You may be used to us being SOHO Advisers or SMB Advisers but we have not changed our mission. We are here to help with business needs ranging from the small startup home business to the established medium sized business. We can, and do, support large businesses too.
We’ve been supporting the SOHO and SMB market since 1992 and know the challenges that face a small to medium sized business. Most small business don't have the expertise or time to manage the PCs that keep their business running and they may not have enough spare money to pay someone to do it for them. This site is designed to help the with that by providing How To articles and assembling information on helpful topics that we run into frequently.
Need to establish a website or you are not happy with your current provider? We also provide webhosting through sohowebhosts.com.
Note: All information on this site is based on our experience and opinion. If you are unsure what you are doing please seek an IT professional prior to making any changes to your system.
Safe Surfing with OpenDNSLike many of you, I have children and home and I am concerned about the time they spend on the computer and where they go. I’ve spent countless time configuring products that require a lot of configuration and in most cases they interfere so much with the computer they are not worth running. One product that I use faithfully now is from OpenDNS. OpenDNS has three options: Basic, Deluxe, and Enterprise. The Basic option is Free and will suffice for most users of this site while others will opt for the Deluxe option. I use the Basic version today but I’ll move to the Deluxe once they enable Block Page Bypass. While OpenDNS uses its DNS severs to provide its users fast reliable DNS servers the benefit for me is the ability to Control Content and provide security from known Botnet and Phishing sites. Fast DNS is nice but Content Control and Security are the most important to me. I’ve been using OpenDNS for several months now and love it. It took a while to figure out I needed to add VPN Exceptions to see local machines on my network and connect to my work VPN but once that was worked out, I never looked back. If you want to have an easy low or no cost option to help keep your kids or employees PCs safe, OpenDNS has the answer. So what’s the catch? When you switch to OpenDNS you will see their advertising and page when you mistype a URL or the site is not available. To me this in not a big deal as most ISPs do this today. The difference with OpenDNS is that they give you the ability to add shortcuts and modify your typo lists so you won’t see it as often. Check them out at http://www.opendns.com. Stay tuned for a step by step guide on how I configured OpenDNS. Last Updated (Wednesday, 30 December 2009 00:24) VMware Player vmnetcfgRecently I was using VMware Player 3 on my laptop but I was not able to get an IP address with Bridged Networking selected. Being a user of VMware products for many years, I knew there was a quick fix. I navigated to the VMware Player directory to run vmnetcfg but it was not there. Unfortunately, the new version of VMware Player doesn’t include vmnetcfg in the installer anymore. Lucy for all of us, it is included in the installer. To extract vmnetcfg.exe from the installer do the following:
Now you can run vmnetcfg to exclude network adapters from binding.
